  • Bybit launches digital rupee payments to enhance security for Indian users.
  • The e-rupee joins existing rupee payment options like bank transfers and UPI.
  • The digital rupee is a pilot project with both retail and wholesale versions.
  • The integration aims to foster trust and attract more merchants to Bybit.

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has introduced digital rupee payments, expanding its payment options for Indian users. This move aims to enhance security and offer a seamless transaction experience for users in India. The e-rupee will be available as a wallet-based payment solution, complementing existing options such as bank transfers, third-party services like Paytm, and India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Joan Han, Bybit’s sales and marketing director, highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “By incorporating the eRupee payment, Bybit aims to elevate the payment experience for INR [Indian rupee] users, fostering trust and reliability in every transaction. Furthermore, this initiative is expected to attract a wider pool of merchants to the platform.”

At present, the e-rupee is used on Bybit for peer-to-peer crypto transactions. The Indian CBDC (central bank digital currency) is a pilot project, with the retail e-rupee launched in December 2022, shortly after the debut of the wholesale version.

In March 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the United Arab Emirates Central Bank signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a CBDC bridge between the two jurisdictions. This agreement aims to facilitate cross-border transactions and enhance the interoperability of digital currencies.

Despite the presence of the digital rupee on a crypto exchange being noteworthy, its adoption has faced challenges. The e-rupee’s usage has been limited, and it has been criticized for being cumbersome. However, ongoing efforts to improve its functionality, such as adding offline capabilities, could increase its usage in areas with limited internet access.

Programmability was added to the digital rupee this year, with its first use being the reimbursement of carbon credits to farmers by IndusInd Bank in April. These initiatives highlight the potential of the e-rupee to enhance financial inclusion and streamline various transactions.
