  • Residents of Vienna over the age of 18 can verify their World ID at several locations.

  • Worldcoin has faced skepticism and regulatory challenges in various countries.

The Worldcoin Foundation has announced the launch of its World ID-issuing orb in Austria, marking another step in its European expansion. As of July 31, residents of Vienna over the age of 18 can verify their World ID at several locations throughout the city. This initiative adds to Worldcoin’s growing network, which now includes over 6.3 million users worldwide.

Compliance and Privacy

Worldcoin, operated by the Germany-based company Tools for Humanity, is ensuring compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The project has also consulted with the Austrian data protection authority to address privacy and data security concerns. The company emphasizes that World ID verification does not collect additional personal data beyond the iris scan required for the process.

Friederike Lumbroso-Baumgartner, the general manager at Tools for Humanity for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, stated that the project aims to rapidly expand its reach. “Our goal is to enable as many people as possible to obtain the World ID quickly,” she said.

Expanding Awareness

Worldcoin is encouraging Austrians interested in the initiative to become Worldcoin ambassadors to help spread awareness and understanding of the project. The launch in Austria follows a similar launch in Germany, which came after an investigation by the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (BayLDA) over concerns of biometric data collection.

Worldcoin has faced skepticism from other governmental agencies across the globe, including in Spain, where it has halted operations for the time being. Despite these challenges, the company has been actively working toward compliance with local privacy laws to gain more trust from users and regulators worldwide.

Mixed Reception

In addition to Spain, Worldcoin has been asked to stop services in Hong Kong, where the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data concluded that Worldcoin’s operations violated its Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. However, the company has been working to address these concerns and improve its data security measures.

In Kenya, Worldcoin faced a probe by local authorities, which led to the suspension of its operations in 2023. However, the investigation was dropped in June, with authorities stating that “no further police action” would be taken.
