Coinbase’s Base blockchain is set to introduce Basenames, a new tool designed to make alphanumeric blockchain addresses human-readable. This tool leverages the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) to enhance usability and connectivity within the blockchain ecosystem.
Points
- Basenames will make alphanumeric blockchain addresses human-readable.
- The tool leverages the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) for .eth addresses.
- Users can connect multiple wallets and customize profiles.
- Basenames will serve as an onchain resume for skills and credentials.
- The tool aims to improve connectivity and ease of use within the blockchain community.
The team behind Coinbase’s Base blockchain has unveiled a new product called Basenames, designed to make alphanumeric blockchain addresses human-readable. This innovative tool leverages the popular Ethereum Name Service (ENS), allowing users to create .eth addresses, such as vitalik.eth or tom.base.eth.
At the BaseCamp Summit on Thursday, Base Head of Product Thomas Vieira explained the vision for Basenames: “Our vision for Base Names is that it is the connective tissue that will enable builders to connect with other builders, builders to more closely connect with the people.” He added humorously, “I may have 10^18 problems, but onchain identity won’t be one.”
Users will be able to connect a variety of wallets to the application, including MetaMask, Rainbow, and Coinbase Wallet, to register a name. Additionally, a dedicated webpage will allow users to search for other Basename addresses to interact with, customize their profiles with bios, social media handles, and relevant skills.
Basenames will essentially function as an onchain resume, where users can attest to their skills (like proficiency in Solidity programming, marketing experience, or legal expertise) with bona fides onchain. These credentials and other blockchain data will create a holistic, united builder profile.
“Finding people to build with is one of the main problems we’re trying to solve…we want you to be able to connect more closely with…people in your community,” Vieira said.
Moreover, like other onchain naming systems, including ENS and Unstoppable Domains, Basenames will simplify sending payments and reduce errors associated with alphanumeric addresses. Basenames will look similar to .eth ENS addresses but will include a Base-specific domain extension, such as base.eth.
The product will initially be available to attendees of BaseCamp and will be rolled out to the general public in the coming weeks.
