Ledger CEO Explains What Makes a Wallet Secure as Ledger Flex Launches

Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier details the security features of the newly launched Ledger Flex, emphasizing its secure element chip, secure operating system, and secure touchscreen as the pillars of hardware wallet security.

Points

  • Ledger Flex features E-Ink touchscreen and secure element chip
  • Near-field communication (NFC) logins and two-factor authentication (2FA)
  • Secure element chip powers the touchscreen
  • Comparison with other hardware wallets
  • Availability and pricing details

Hardware wallet provider Ledger has launched its new touchscreen wallet, Ledger Flex, following the earlier introduction of Ledger Stax. On July 26, Ledger announced the availability of Ledger Flex, priced at $249, making it more affordable than the $399 Stax.

According to Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier, Flex and Stax set a new standard for Ledger devices by combining uncompromising security with an intuitive interface. The new products feature E-Ink touchscreens and near-field communication (NFC) logins through the Ledger Security Key, enhancing user experience without compromising security.

Ledger wallets, including Flex, support passwordless logins and two-factor authentication (2FA) using the open FIDO2 standard for passkeys. This standard ensures decentralized access across platforms, compatible with services like Google, Amazon, Binance, and Coinbase. Users can log in by tapping their Flex or Stax on their phones or connecting via USB to their computers.

Gauthier explained that a truly secure wallet requires three key elements: a secure element chip for generating and storing private keys, a secure operating system built on this chip, and a secure screen powered by the secure element. He emphasized that only Ledger devices meet all three criteria, distinguishing them from other hardware wallets and mobile phones.

Ledger Flex is available for purchase on the company’s website and at Best Buy stores across the United States. As Ledger continues to innovate, it remains committed to providing secure and user-friendly solutions for crypto self-custody.

Explanation

  • Near-Field Communication (NFC): A technology that enables secure communication between devices over short distances, often used for contactless payments and authentication.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): An additional layer of security that requires not only a password and username but also something that only the user has on them, such as a physical token or a mobile app.
  • FIDO2 Standard: An open authentication standard that enables secure, passwordless logins using public key cryptography.
